Clauses in a compound sentence:
I went to the shop and I bought some milk. 2 independent clauses 2 verbs/ processes Joined together by a coordinating conjunction. |
Clauses in a complex sentence:
I went to the shop because I wanted milk. 1 independent clause 1 dependent clause starting with a subordinating conjunction 2 verbs/ processes |
Independent Clauses:
- It is a finished sentence, on its own. - It makes sense on its own. I went to the shop. I went to the shop and I bought some milk. Examples:

Dependent Clauses:
- Is NOT finished & does not make sense on its own . - Needs help to be a finished sentence - it is added to an independent clause so it makes sense (2 parts). - Start with special words - subordinate/ binding conjunctions - Can go at the start or the end of a sentence which I made by hand because the pool was deep Because the pool was deep, I dived in. Examples:
