It's easy to get confused with referencing because there are different ways to reference! The most common is the Harvard Referencing System using a bibliography or reference list!
What are the differences between types of referencing?
A bibliography and a reference list are the most common. Both are used in Harvard Author-Date referencing. The only difference is a bibliography includes everything you read, even if it's not useful. A reference list only includes the information you have actually used in your work. (A bibliography is longer than a reference list.) Both of these use in-text references: (Smith, 1990)
Footnotes and end notes are a different system to Harvard referencing. They use numbers to link to references (like you see in Wikipedia.) There's an image in the slideshow.
If you study Psychology, the APA (American Psychology Association) has their own referencing system.
