Further information on language use in the example given below:
Australia has a history of racism, discrimination, and genocide. Because there was so much harm done in the past, we must be careful with our actions, and our words, to try and heal the harm. - White Settler Richard Bourke declared Australia Terra Nullius, meaning empty land. It meant that settlers pretended Aboriginal people were animals – so they could steal the land. So it is common and polite to add “people” after “Aboriginal”. - There are many names for Aboriginal peoples – Aborigine is old and now considered rude. Some groups prefer “Indigenous Australian”, some prefer “Aboriginal Australian”. Most groups prefer their country name, for example, “Kaurna people” – and we often use “proud”, for example, “Uncle Tamaru is a proud Kaurna man”. |
