In English we have "count" nouns - things we can count- and "non-count" or "uncountable" nouns - things we can't directly count. This affects the words we use to quantify - to tell us how much / how many.
Examples: non-count noun = I have 3 milks. X (Milk is a non-count noun.) count noun = I have 3 bottles of milk. ✓ (Bottle is a count noun.)
Count nouns
Can be counted as one or more: one pen, 3 pens, a balloon, 5 balloons
Use an S to form a plural: one pen, 3 pens a balloon, 5 balloons
use expressions such as: a few, few, many, some, every, each, these, the number.
Examples of count nouns with expressions: a few pens, a few computers, many bottles, some spoons, every desk, each cup, these televisions, the number of chairs, a few shoes, a few fingers, many flowers, four cameras, every stick, each balloon, these books, the number of tables, many combs,
Count nouns: negatives, questions & offers
Use expressions such as: any, many, a
Question examples: Do you have any bottles? Do you have many bottles?
Negative examples: I do not have any bottles. I do not have many bottles.
Offers: Would you like a bottle?
Non-count nouns
Cannot be counted: 3 informations X
Do not use an S to form a plural, generally cannot be pluralised. 3 informations X
Sometimes use articles "the", "some" I drink water. ✓. The water is clear. ✓ I drank all of the water. ✓
Information is key. ✓ Did you get the information?✓ I got some nformation . ✓
Do NOT use expressions such as: these, those, every, each, either
Work with expressions such as (some, any, enough, this, that, and much).
Examples of count nouns with expressions: We ate some rice and milk. I hope to see some sunshine today. This meat is good. Do you see any traffic on the road.? That wine is very old.
Non-count nouns: negatives, questions & offers
Use expressions such as: any, much, some
Question examples: Do you have any milk? Do you have much milk?
Negative examples: I do not have any milk. I do not have much milk.
Offers: Would you like some milk?
Warning! A really common mistake is with "information":
Information is a non-count noun: non-count noun quantifier = I have many information. X count noun quantifier = I have a lot of information. ✓
